About Art with Coach T

Art is the tool.

While I’ve worked with children for over 20 years, my other passion in life is strength training.

And I’ve always applied the same basic principle in both the classroom and the gym: what you practice grows stronger.

But growth doesn’t show up in real time. It shows up after practicing progressively challenging tasks over time (while managing frustration)—not an easy concept for littles to learn.

Be comfortable being uncomfortable?! Yes. Yes indeed. Because that’s where the most growth happens.

And tolerating tension of any kind requires consistent practice, patience, and self-discipline.

Those life skills are what I have been coaching in my classroom for nearly a decade.

That is why I am Coach T.

Art is the tool. Growth mindset is the product.

Process over progress.

Practice makes progress, right? Right.

But it’s only through consistent practice of the process that can lead to progress (increased skill).

Process is the how. Progress is the what.

But process doesn’t always feel really good. And progress isn’t linear. SO — how do we teach this concept to kids?

I do it through art making.

I coach healthy habits and mindset through art making.

And now that I have moved on from the classroom, I want to help families practice these habits together.

The art is the motivational progress. The mindset fuels the process.

Connect and create.

My projects aren’t designed to keep your kid busy. The hope is that you’ll sit down beside them and create too.

Let them see you make mistakes and work through frustration. Ask questions. Try something different. Model a growth mindset.

We’ve all know that kids don’t listen, but they do watch.

Authentically modeling self-discipline and consistent effort will help you build and maintain trusting relationships with your kids.
